Horticulture Competitions

General Rules
- All entries must have been produced or made since September 2010 by the exhibitor whose name appears on the entry tag. Once an entry has been exhibited in the fair, it cannot be entered again in the future.
- Entries are limited to residents of Brevard County and must be amateurs in the department in which they enter.
All entries must have an official entry tag attached with name, address, and phone number of exhibitor.- Please refer to category rules for entry deadlines and release dates. A claim check must be presenteed to redeem entries. No exhibit may be removed before release without consent of the Fair or exhibitors will forfiet any premiums. Unclaimed items become property of the Fair.
- An exhibitor may enter only one item per class.
- The Fair reserves the right to combine or divide entries to make a class.
- While due care will be taken with all entries, the Fair cannot be responsible for loss or damage. Precious and extremely valuable items are discouraged.
- Department supervisor may bar from competition entries of poor quality.
- The Fair office will issue awards within six weeks of the close of the Fair. Awards will be paid according to the judge's books, not from ribbons.
Divisions
Age divisions are as follows, unless specified by category:
- Division A - K-2nd grade
- Division B - 3rd-5th grade
- Division C - 6th-8th grade
- Division D - 9th-12th grade
- Division E - Adult
Awards:
- 1st - 3rd place (Blue, Red and White ribbons) will be awarded in each Division for each class. All ribbon winners will be displayed. All other items displayed as space permits.
- Best in Division will be selected from the 1st place winners of each class within a section and will receive a Rosette and $25.
- Best in Show will be selected from Best in Division winners within each category and will receive a Rosette and $50.

Category: Horticulture
- Drop off and registration: Monday, March 28 at the Fair Grounds between 11:00AM to 8:00 p.m.
- Winners will be displayed: The duration of the fair
- Pick up: Sunday, April 10 by 5 p.m. Any exhibits left after 5 p.m. will become the property of Brevard County Extension.
Section 1: Container Garden
- Container must contain no fewer than three (3) plants and no more than nine (9) plants.
- Container must include a minimum of one vertical element
- Container must include a minimum of one weeping (or trailing) element
- Container may only include plants (no artificial elements may be included)
- A label must be taped on the back side of the container.
- The label must be on white 3”x5” paper or white index card.
- The label must include the botanical name of each plant species in the container. See http://brevard.ifas.ufl.edu or call the University of Florida Brevard County Extension office for help finding botanical names.
- Labels must be typed (no handwriting).
- Label must include the name of the entrant.
- Container must have a drainage hole.
- Use a potting mix, not a native soil.
Class 1: Ornamental Garden
Containers must be a minimum of 10" in diameter (measure the inside of the container at the top) and constructed of any type of material.
Class 2: Succulant Garden
Containers must be a minimum of 10" in diameter (measure the inside of the container at the top)and constructed of any type of material.
Class 3: Herbs
Herbs are plants that have use outside of the garden such as culinary, medicinal, and utilitarian. See http://brevard.ifas.ufl.edu for more information on herbs. Container size: 18-24” diameter (measure the inside of the container at the top).
Class 4: Foliage Garden
Foliage gardens are used for their foliage color and texture. Most foliage gardens are displayed indoors (think houseplants). Containers must be a minimum of 10" in diameter (measure the inside of the container at the top)and constructed of any type of material.
Class 5: Unusual Containers
Get creative! Show off your unusual container! Only one (1) plant per container is required.
Section 2: Hanging Baskets
- Container must contain no fewer than three (3) plants and no more than 9 (nine) plants.
- Container must include a minimum of one vertical element
- Container must include a minimum of one weeping (or trailing) element.
- Container may only include plants (no artificial elements may be included).
- Containers must be at least 10” in diameter.
- Use wire hanging baskets filled with sphagnum moss.
- A label must be attached to the bottom of the wire basket with twine or string.
- The label must be on white 3”x5” paper or white index card.
- The label must include the botanical name of each plant species in the container. See http://brevard.ifas.ufl.edu or call the University of Florida Brevard County Extension office for help finding botanical names.
- Label must be typed (no handwriting).
- Label must include the name of the entrant.

Category: Vegetables

- One vegetable per plate.

- Name of vegetable and entrant’s name must be on the label.
Section 2: Largest Vegetable
- Vegetable must be grown by the entrant.
- Vegetables must be washed and clean.
- Vegetable must be displayed on a plain, white paper plate.
- Label must be typed and attached to the bottom of the plate.
- Name of vegetable and entrant’s name must be on the label.
Class 1: Radish
Class 2: Bell pepper
Class 3: Tomato
Class 4: Cucumber
Class 5: Cabbage
Class 6: Root crops (Carrot, turnips, kohlrabi, etc.)
Class 7: Other
Section 3: Best Quality Vegetable
- Vegetable must be grown by the entrant.
- Vegetables must be washed and clean.
- Vegetables must be displayed on a plain, white paper plate.
- Label must be typed and attached to the bottom of the plate.
- Name of vegetable and entrant’s name must be on the label.
